This estimate is for a regular salary. Bonuses, travel allowances and other income will change the figure on your payslip.
How your take-home pay is worked out
Your employer works out PAYE on what you would earn over a full tax year, then takes off one-twelfth each month. The calculator follows the same steps.
- Yearly income. Your monthly salary times 12.
- Retirement deduction. Contributions to a pension, provident fund or RA come off before tax, up to 27.5% of your income or R430 000 a year, whichever is lower.
- Tax from the table, less your rebate. SARS applies the bracket table below, then subtracts the rebate for your age. Everyone gets R17 820; people aged 65 and older get more.
- Medical aid credit. R376 a month for you, R376 for your first dependant and R254 for each extra dependant comes off your tax.
- UIF. You pay 1% of your salary to the Unemployment Insurance Fund, up to R177.12 a month.

Common questions
Why is my payslip different from this figure?
Your payroll may include things this calculator leaves out, such as a travel allowance, overtime, a bonus or other deductions your employer makes.
When do these figures change?
The Minister of Finance announces new tables in the Budget each February. They apply from 1 March, and this calculator is updated before then.
Do I pay tax if I earn under R99 000 a year?
No. If you are under 65 and your taxable income is below R99 000 a year, the rebate cancels out your tax. You still pay UIF.
